DYING YOUR HAIR

This is a touchy topic, I know, and something many women (and in some cultures, many men also dye their hair & beards) do not want to hear about. These chemicals in the dyes can be so toxic that, like the chemicals in perfumes, they have been implicated in birth defects. WOW! People, do you know how bad that is?

I know there is controversy about this subject and some people say there have not been enough studies to prove there is a higher cancer rate related to the use of hair dye. But let's be reasonable. We cannot put chemicals on our skin, in our eyes, in our food, in our lotions, in our lungs, and then expect to have good health! If you are using over the counter personal care products, this is exactly what you are doing. If you read about the source of your hair dye, I don't think you'll want to use it.

I have used henna, a plant coloring agent, on my hair for years, but have recently stopped. I heard that even black henna may have a bad affect on one's health and, in fact, may not be henna at all. I have now gone au natural. (new photo soon, when my hair is all grown out!) The following is a quote from wikipedia about black henna: "Products sold as "black henna" or "neutral henna" are not made from henna, but may be derived from indigo (in the plant Indigofera tinctoria) or Cassia obovata, and may contain unlisted dyes and chemicals.[3]"

Let's think about the effects, too, of all of these chemicals being washed down the drain into our increasingly compromised water supply. Not only the dyes, but the styling gels, almost all of which contain PVC - otherwise known as poly-vinyl chloride, or PLASTIC! This is also being washed down the drains DAILY and into the water table by millions of people. Is it any wonder Mother Earth is feeling the effects of this? (Aubrey has a styling gel that is free from pvc.)

Other than the health risks, I felt it is time for me to be completely in sync with my advocating a natural lifestyle - even though using henna is a natural product. I am committed to being organic or chemical free in my food and body products, why not let the hair be free and natural too. I admit it has put me through some changes when I see myself in the mirror as the henna roots grow out and my silvery hair comes in, but isn't this part of life? We are not going to live here forever, and it is natural to accept the stage of life I now find my self entering.

And.... here's another beautiful reason to go completely au naturale: I am now a grandmama! Here is a photo of my son Peter, and my grandson Lucean - who are also committed to the natural life-style. Being with babies can remind us about what really matters in life, which is connecting through spirit and heart, and has nothing to do with hair color!
